2023 school year

    We have attended the 43rd Annual Conference of Japan Academy of Nursing Science in Shimonoseki and given six presentations.

    We have attended the 53rd Annual Meeting of Japanese Society for Wound Healing in Karuizawa and given five presentations.

  • We held our alumni meeting, "Yaezakura-no-kai"at Ishikawa Prefectural Nursing University. We were happy to meet up again and share the recent study conducted at our lab.

  • Assistant professor Mari Abe's presentation has been awarded in The International Lymphoedema Framework Japan 12th Annual Meeting.

  • We have attended The International Lymphoedema Framework Japan 12th Annual Meeting in Ishikawa and given two presentations.

  • We had Newgeneration's Nursing Research Seminer. The students got the valuable feedback which was different perspectives from other universities' faculty across disciplines and it was a good opportunity of learning.

  • Hongo Summer Dojo at UTokyo 2023 hosted by GNRC was held at Tetsumon Memorial Hall, the University of Tokyo. Professor Gojiro Nakagami presented from our laboratory. We invited researchers from overseas to give lectures. It was productive metting as well as meaningful discussion by making our university's research known to researchers from overseas.

2022 school year

    We participated The spring International Program2023 held at the University of Tokyo. The participants, researchers and graduate students from eight countries, discussed about their healthcare system and we held the workshop about our research.

    We attended the 8th Asia Pacific Enterostomal Therapy Nurse Association at Taipei, Taiwan, and gave 14 presentations. Associate professor Gojiro Nakagami received the Best Oral Award. Furthermore, Project Associate Professor Takeo Minematsu and Ms. Ayano Nakai, a PhD student, achieved the Best Moderated Poster Award.

  • We celebrated Professor Hiromi Sanada for her achievement that she was elected as a FAAN.

  • Professor Hiromi Sanada was inducted as a FAAN(Fellow of American Academy of Nursing) at the annual meeting of American Academy of Nursing held in Washington, D.C.

    Professor Hiromi Sanada, Associate professor Gojiro Nakagami, and Ms. Mao Kunimitsu attended The 21st Annual Meeting of the European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel in Lyon, France, and gave presentations.

    We joined the international summer school at Nottingham trent university and learned about latest researches and teaching methods around the world. Professor Hiromi Sanada gave a lecture at the international symposium. Young faculties gave workshop lectures and hands-on. Students gave research presentations. The LIMPRINT poster, which is the result of ILFJ, received the Best Innovation Poster Award.

    This year’s summer camp was held in Ito city of Shizuoka province. A warm atmosphere was full of the hall, everyone participated in the discussion though in a new environment. After the seminar, all of the members enjoyed the BBQ.

    National Taiwan University and National Taiwan University Hospital’s Surgery Department Assistant Professor Tai, Clinical Associate Professor Cheng, Department of Nursing’s Supervisor Miss, Wu and Et nurse Miss, Chung visited our Global Nursing Research Center (GNRC) and had an observation of pressure ulcer ward consultation. We extend our sincere gratitude to Prof. Tai and Prof. Cheng gave us lectures about National Taiwan University Hospital and wound healing.

    We attended The 40th Annual International Conference of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society (IEEE EMBC'18) in Honolulu, HI. Dr. Hiroshi Noguchi (Dept. of Life Support Technology), Mr. Shuhei Noyori, and Mr. Koki Ono gave presentations at the poster session.

2017 school year

  • Koki Ono (Undergraduate 4th Year) received The School of Integrated Health Sciences Dissertation Award for his research on “Development of an automatic pressure ulcer severity estimation algorithm”. This award is given to the graduating student from The University of Tokyo, Faculty of Medicine, School of Integrated Health Sciences who received the highest recognition for his/her dissertation.

    We attended 2017 Annual Meeting of Taiwan Society for Wound Care at Taipei, Taiwan, and had four special and invited presentations. Furthermore, Prof. Sanada and Dr. Nakagami were invited as lecturers by National Taiwan University and Taipei Medical University.

    We participated International Research and Development Summer School held at University of Nottingham, the UK. The participants, researchers and graduate students from five countries, discussed about wounds and lymphoedema. We introduced ultrasonographic and thermographic assessment methods for pressure ulcers and shared the technologies used for nursing assessment in Japan with researchers from other countries.

    We went to Itako, Ibaraki, today for a seminar lodging trip and hoped you were keeping well, in spite of the lingering summer heat.

    We attended International Lymphoedema Framework 2017 at Siracusa, Italy. Furthermore, Prof. Sanada and Dr.Nakagami presented at the Plenary session and Prof. Sgama reported the result of an international joint research project.

    We attended the Australian Vascular Access Society (AVAS) 2017 Scientific Meeting, which incorporates the World Congress of Vascular Access (WoCoVA) Special Event at the Perth. Furthermore, Dr. Murayama presented by poster and Mr Tanabe and Mr. Takahashi presented by oral. Before the congress, we visited The Fiona Stanley Hospital and attended the confference of The Western Australia AVATAR group.

    We attended 5th Congress of World Union of Wound Healing Societies conducted at Florence, Italy, and had two oral and seven poster presentations. Furthermore, prof. Sanada and Dr. Nakagami were invited as a chair-man and a lecturer, respectively. After the congress, we visited The University of Pisa and its university hospital and discussed future nursing research, education of aging/aged societies with facility member of the university.

  • We attended the 26th conference of EWMA at London. Ms. Kitamura, a PhD candidate, had a presentation of his work and was given some beneficial suggestions and questions from overseas researchers, and it was great opportunity for us to develop our researches.

2015 school year

    We attended The 10th IAGG Asia / Oceania Congress of Gerontology and Geriatrics 2015 conducted at Chiang Mai, Thailand. We had three oral presentations and one poster presentation and had a great opportunity to transmit our innovative research to the world. Furthermore, we visited The Faculty of Nursing of The Chiang Mai University and its university hospital. We shared and discussed about the nursing education, ETN, and WOCN in Japan and Thailand.

  • Dr. Yuwandee Kestsumpun visited our lab from Thailand and delivered a special lecture about pressure ulcer care in Thailand and education of nursing in Thailand. We got a great opportunity to learn.

  • We visited Indonesia. On the first day, we met Board Members of Indonesian Nursing Association in Jakarta, discussing about the differences in medical insurance and nursing education system in both countries and recent research topic. President of INA also attended the meeting and had a fruitful discussion among us. After that, we flew to Pontianak, West Kalimantan Province to meet our research collaborators at Kitamura Wound Care clinic headed by Dr. Suriadi to promote our international collaborative research. We shared some knowledge regarding mobile ultrasonogprahy for skin assessment, shown in the pic. A lot of patients suffering from severe diabetic foot ulcers visit this clinic. To solve such problem, we are now planing to start new collaborative researches. The visit was so successful.

    We visited to National Taiwan University and Taipei Medical University, and had meaningful discussions about nursing education and researches. Furthermore, we attended 2015 Global Prospect and New Innovations for Best Wound Care and Scar Management held at Kaohsiung and had three presentations. Dr. Nakagami received The Best Paper Award for his presentation. The research was a joint research with Prof. Schultz of The University of Florida, focusing on a visualizing method for biofilms on pressure ulcer surfaces. We had a great opportunity to transmit our innovative research to the world.

    Prof. Sanada and Dr. Nakagami had lectures at The University of Nottingham in UK. We discussed our research with researchers of the univ. After the visiting, we attended the 25th conference of EWMA at London. Mr. Goto, a PhD candidate, had a presentation of his work and was given some beneficial suggestions and questions from overseas researchers, and it was great opportunity for us to develop our researches.

  • Professor Keryln Carville visited our Lab from Australia and delivered a special lecture about education of nursing faculty and wound management service specific to Austaralia. We got a great opportunity to learn a lot.as well as to talk about the collaborative research project on skin tear.

  • Professor Sanada lectured at 2014 TSBIW Annual Meeting and Wound Symposium~New Century of Wound Care and Management, and Innovation for Best Wound Care in Taiwan.

    Professor Sanada lectured at the University of Muhammadiyah Pontianak in Indonesia. We visited Dr. Suriadi at Kitamura Wound Care Clinic to observe the diabetic foot ulcer care practice as well as to talk about the joint research project on diabetic foot ulcers.

  • Dr. Sabine M. Becker visited our Lab from Germany and delivered a special lecture about positioning strategy. We got a great opportunity to learn a lot.

2013 school year

    Professor Sanada attended the 17th East asia forum of nusing scholars as a exective commttee member. Moreover, assistant professor Yoshida had a presentation in poster session. The presentation received considerable interest from the audience.     We visited Professor Keryln Carville at Curtin University, School of Nursing and Midwifery at Perth, Australia, who is an internationally recognized skin tear researcher, to discuss about the collaborative research regarding skin tear prediction and prevention. We also visited Silver Chain which is the largest community health care provider NPO in Australia to learn the advanced tele-health system for community and home care. Additionally, we met Professor Helen Edwards at Queensland University of Technology, Institute of Health and Biochemical Innovation to have a research meeting with members of a new mode of research team integrating nursing and engineering, which inspired us to think about the future shape of nursing research.

    Professor Sanada attended the 5th congress of Asia Pacific Enterostomal Therapy Nurses Association in Conjunction with Korean Society of Coloproctology as a symposiast as well as a chairperson. She had a presentation on a novel preventive protocol for deep tissue injury using ultrasonographic assessment technique and a treatment device with vibration at the symposium. The presentation received considerable interest from the audience.

  • Dr. Yuni istanti Permata Sari (the Head of Post Graduate Nursing Programs at the University Muhammaadiyah of Jogjakarta), Dr. Suriadi (Director at Kitamura Clinic, Lecturer at the University Muhammaadiyah of Jogjakarta), Ms. Ferika (Staff at the University Muhammaadiyah of Jogjakarta) and Mr. Defa (Staff Nurse at Kitamura Clinic) visited the laboratory on August 28-29 from Indonesia. Dr. Yuni Sari delivered a special lecture on "Graduate education in nursing at the University Muhammaadiyah of Jogjakarta" and Dr. Suriadi delivered a lecture on complementary and alternative therapies. The lectures were very interesting.

  • We attended and gave presentations at IEEE EMBC (Engineering in Medicine and Biology Conference), and were stimulated through the discussion with reseachers.

    Professor Sanada gave a presentation as a symposist at the 20th IAGG World congress of gerontology and geriatrics in Seoul, Korea. The conference thema was “Digital aging: A New Horizon for Health Care and Active Aging.” Experts from different countries and different reseach areas had lively discussion and it was a very good stimulation for us. A graduate of our laboratory Hiroe Koyanagi has been awaded poster prize.

  • Professor Sanada gave an invited lecture at the 1st Borneo International Nursing Conference 2013 in Pontianak, Indonesia.

  • Ms. Janice C. Colwel of University of Chicago Medical Center delivered a lecture on Wound Care in the United States. We had an invaluable opportunity to learn about the wound care specialty nurses and hot topic of wound care in the U.S.

  • We had a wonderful opportunity to receive a lecture on skin tear from Dr. Keryln Carville, Professor of Primary Health Care and Community Nursing Silver Chain and Curtin University. She told us about her previous and ongoing research. We were deeply impressed with her passion for nursing research.

  • Professor Sanada attended and made a presentation at International Council of Nurses (ICN) 25th Quadrennial Congress in Melbourne, Australia.

  • We attended and made a presentation at the 23rd Conference of the European Wound Management Association in Copenhagen, Denmark. Experts from different countries had lively discussion and it was a very good stimulation for us.

  • Multidisciplinary pressure ulcer team, University of Tokyo Hospital, received JWC 2013 Innovation Award.

2012 school year

  • We had a wonderful opportunity to have a lecture about current status of nursing graduation in Brazil and wound care research in her country from Prof. Santos VLCG, an Associate Professor of School of Nursing, University of Sao Paulo. We learned a lot from her attractive and fruitful lecture.

    We attended 4th World Union of Wound Healing Societies. World wide experts of wound management attended this academic conference. We received a lot of useful tips for my research. Our project lecturer, Dr. Minematsu has been awarded poster prize. Graduates of our laboratory Shinji Iizaka and Hirofumi Kato has also been awarded poster prize.

  • A welcome party was held in our laboratory to welcome Dr. Sanchis, an assistant professor of Physical Therapy Faculty of the University of Valencia. He came to our laboratory this month to learn about the prevention and management of pressure ulcer. His arrival bring a new spirit to our lab in doing a study

    Professor Sanada and Lecture Nakagami attended the 4th International Lymphoedema Framework (ILF) Conference on June 28-30, 2012 in Montpellier, France. A lot of medical professionals, researchers, marketers and representative of patients association from all around the world got together. Among them many were members of ILF Japan. Professor Sanada, acted as a chairman in the Skin Care and Lymphoedema session, worked with Professor Sugama holding a workshop and made a presentation about development and evaluation of patients’ database for ILF-Japan. Lecturer Nakagami made poster presentation in this conference. The ILF Japan Conference will hold on August 11, in Aomori University of health and welfare.

    We attended and made poster presentation at the 22nd Conference of European Wound Management Association on May 23-25, 2012 in Vienna, Austria. The theme of the conference was “Wound healing -Different perspectives, one goal”. Experts from different countries had lively discussion and it was a very good stimulation for us. At the same time of our stay in Vienna, we had a great chance to visit Prof. Mayer's laboratory in the Department of Nursing Science, University of Vienna. We could not only have an outstanding opportunity to learn about actual nursing research as well as education in the University of Austria, but also make a good friendship with laboratory members.

  • There was an excellent and wonderful lecture in our laboratory from MS. Barbara McLean, who is one of the leading experts in critical care in the world, came from united states on May 8, 2012. She gave us a vivid and latest lecture on Update on Rationale for Using and Clinical Risk Associated with Fecal Management System and had a lively discussion with all students and teachers on the epidemiology and management of Clostoridium Difficile Infection. All of us not only learned a lot from her evidence based viewpoint but also was deeply impressed by her presentation. For globalization, this is a valid chance to get good understanding and communication about nursing research between Japan and the other countries.

2011 school year

  • Happy New Year!! May the year of 2012 bring you a lot of happiness and smiles!

  • We held the 7th Advanced Wound care seminar at The University of Tokyo. Professor Donna Z Bliss who is Professor of the School of Nursing, University of Minnesota gave a special lecture about the management of fecal incontinence and the assesment of Incontinence Associated Dermatitis (IAD) based on her own research. Prof Junichi Sasaki from Keio University also gave an excellent lecture about the importance of the introduction of a new bowel management system. We got invaluable knowledge about fecal incontinence management from both lectures.

  • Professor Donna Z Bliss, well-known internationally as a leading researcher of fecal incontinence management from School of Nursing, University of Minnesota, US, visited our laboratory and gave a comprehensive and great lecture. She talked about the randomized controlled trial for nursing research. We hope we can have many other opportunities to learn with her again in a near future.

2010 school year

  • Professor Christine J Moffatt, a well-known internationally as a leading researcher of  lymphoedema and venous leg ulcers from Glasgow University, UK, visited our laboratory and gave a comprehensive and great lecture on August, 18. Her lecture is about the challenge of concordance of patients with leg ulcer, the psychological factor of patients with wound undergoing negative pressure therapy, also current epidemiology of breast cancer related lymphoedema. We hope we will have many other opportunities again to receive her lecture.

  • We attended the sixth brush up seminar 2010 on “"Healing and Preventing the Diabetic Foot Wound: A Marriage of Team, Technology and Tenacity" by Dr. David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Professor of Surgery and Director of Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), who gave the lecture for the first time in Japan. The lecture was held by the Japanese Society of Wound, Ostomy, and Continence Management which Prof. Hiromi Sanada serves as a chief director. It is great opportunity for us to learn from his lecture that conclude the team approach is effective to prevent lower limb amputation.

    We attended the 2010 WOCN/WCET Joint Conference on June 12-16 in Phoenix, Arizona. This conference has been a historical event as the WOCN society and WCET came together with universal focus on patients care. We made four poster presentations in this conference. We learned a lot about the most up-to-date evidence based practices on wound, ostomy, and continence managements. We also visited Dr. David G. Armstrong, DPM, MD, PhD, Professor of Surgery and Director of Southern Arizona Limb Salvage Alliance (SALSA), and enjoyed a study tour at University of Arizona College of Medicine. We had a great opportunity to discuss the marriage of basic study and clinical practice with him.

    The 2nd International Lymphoedema Framework (ILF) conference was held on March 23-25 in Brighton, UK. As members of ILF Japan, Professor Junko Sugama (Visiting Professor of Advanced Skin Care, Tokyo University) and Shizuko Okajima, a master student of our laboratory, participated in this conference. A graduate student of Kanazawa University, Misako Dai, received a best poster award on this event. We learnt a lot about lymphoedema care throughout the world from this event.

  • We received a nice and meaningful lecture about spiritual care and also interesting practice about therapeutic touch from Dr. Seiichi Ariga, Professor of International Studies, University of Waterloo, Canada on January 5th. We learnt a lot through his wonderful experience in helping other people.

  • We had a great opportunity to learn about 'Update and Practice for the Management of Lymphoedema' from Prof. Christine Joy Moffatt, a Honory Professor in Glasgow University. We leaarned many valuable things from her lecture, so we would make the best use of it.

  • We attended and made poster presentation at the 41st Wound Ostomy and Continence Nurses Society Annual Conference on June 6-10, 2009 in St. Louis, MO, USA. Our member of laboratory, Iizaka S, received WOCN Research Poster Merit Award at this conference through the poster entitled “Pressure ulcer assessment using nutritional markers in wound fluid”. Through the meeting, we study a lot about the latest trends of advanced wound management.

  • We had a wonderful opportunity to have a lecture about "Introduction of School of Nursing at UCLA and Future Nurse Perspective in USA" from Dr. Courtney H. Lyder, a Professor and Dean of School of Nursing, UCLA. We learned a lot from his attractive and fruitful lecture.

  • We attended the 10th Annual Conference of Japanese Society of Pressure Ulcer on August 29-30, 2008 in Kobe. We made oral and poster presentation at this conference. After the conference, we had study session to exchange information about our research to students of Kanazawa University. We learnt and got many knowledge from this sessions.

  • We had a great opportunity to get a lecture about lower extremity ulcers from Barbara Bates Jensen who is a well-known expert and researcher in the wound management area. This was the second time that She visited our laboratory. We hope that we will have such opportunity again next time.

  • We held the summer study at Syounan Seminar House in Hiratsuka. We were studying while enjoying the beautiful scenery of Hiratsuka, and went back to Tokyo with new spirit. Happy summer holiday!!

  • Celebration of the establishment of Department of Advanced Skin Care (MISS PARIS) was held. Visiting Professor Junko Sugama, PhD, RN presented her vision to establish the new tchnologies in regard to advanced skin care for next 5 years.

  • We attended 3rd World Union of Wound Healing Societies.We made 3 oral presentations and 5 poster presentation. World wide expert of wound management attended this academic conference. We received a lot of useful tips for my research.

  • We took part in the 21st Annual Meeting of Japanese Society of Geriatric Urology. We found various presentations from different stands, such as a medical staff or an administrative agency, which took us into consideration about meaningful progress of the research.

  • We took part in 51st Annual Meeting of the Japan Diabetes Society. In the sessions of Diabetic Foot Problems, we realized it’s important to assess the whole of patient’s feet and body condition, cooperating with other medical staff.

  • Professor Doi lectured at this laboratory. He told on what is important to be researcher. We were impressed with him.

  • We held internal tennis tournament. We had a nice day. We had a opportunity to promote bonding.

2007 school year

  • Prof. Sanada was invited to the Scientific Meeting of the Korean Wound ManagementSociety in Seoul, and gave a special lecture about "Advanced wound management in Japan" She could learn a lot from Korean WOCNs about their wonderful nursing activities. She comes to the conviction that the knowledge and science of advanced wound management are rapidly evolving in Asia.

  • We held the 3rd Advanced Wound care seminar at The University of Tokyo. Professor Tom Defloor who is President of European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Panel (EPUAP) gave a special lecture about pressure ulcer prevention based on his own research. Prof Junko Sugama from Kanazawa University also gave an excellent lecture about recent trends of nursing research related to support surface in Japan. We got invaluable knowledge about pressure ulcer prevention from both lectures.

    We attended and made presentations at Diabetic Limb Salvage Conference in Washington D.C. We could learn the recent trends of preventing leg amputation which become urgent challenge in USA. We also recognized the importance of prevention of foot ulcers, which become one of main focus in our laboratory.

    We attended 10th Anniversary European Pressure Ulcer Advisory Pannel Open Meeting, in Oxford, England. We made 1 symposium, 2 oral presentations and 1 poster presentation with the poster prize. Through the meeting, we could not only study the latest trends of pressure ulcer management, but also convey the information in Japan to the world.

  • We invited Prof. Christine J. Moffat, Professor Peter J. Franks, and Debra C. Doherty, who are internationally-well known researchers to give a lecture on "Moving forward in wound care; considering the needs of patients," and to collaborate on the lymphoedema project-Japan. They also share their experience about their research and about their viewpoints as the expert and scientist on the management of lymphoedema.

  • We had a great lecture from Dr. Wim Fleischmann, MD (Krankenhaus Bietigheim, Germany) about biological debridement therapy using maggot. The new concept of wound treatment, Biological Mechanical Wound Closure (BMW concept) was introduced with a variety of cases.

  • We had opportunity to have 2nd Advanced Wound Care Seminar at University of Tokyo. Dr. Christine J. Moffatt, professor of Thames Valley University, gave a lecture about international consensus related to management of lymphoedema. Dr. Isao Koshima gave a lecture about micro surgery for curative treatment of lymphoedema. Many physicians, nurses, researchers attended and discussed actively.

    We attended 16th Biennial Congress of The World Council of Enterostomal Therapists (WCET) held in Hong Kong. ETs and WOCNs across the world gathered in a hole to discuss the advanced wound and stoma care.

    We attended European Wound Management Association, EWMA 2006/PRAGUE. Investigators and clinicians familiar with wound care discussed the wound healing, wound management and prevention.

  • We welcomed Dr. Barbara Bates-Jensen, adjunct professor of UCLA, School of Medicine. She gave some lectures about wound management and hospital quality management in Japanse medical academic conferenses.
