〔Biography〕

Professor Hiromi Sanada graduated from St. Luke's College of Nursing (now St. Luke's International University) in 1979. After the graduation, she went on to the ET School of Cleveland Clinic St. Luke's Branch School of Nursing and the Graduate School of Nursing, University of Illinois at Chicago in the United States. In June 2003, she was appointed as the founding professor of the Department of Gerontological Nursing, Division of Health Sciences and Nursing, Graduate School of Medicine, and has served as the Head of School of Integrated Health Sciences, and the founding Director of the Global Nursing Research Center affiliated with the Graduate School of Medicine. In addition, she established two endowed chairs and three social cooperation chairs. During these years, she established new interdisciplinary fields of wound care management and nursing science and engineering, and globally disseminated care innovation through industry-academia collaboration. In particular, she has been disseminating her expertise in the field of pressure ulcers. Especially she started with the elucidation of the mechanism of pressure ulcer development, introduced the Braden scale to Japan, and developed the DESIGN, an evaluation tool for pressure ulcer severity. She has also developed a robotics mattress for pressure ulcer prevention and vibration therapy equipment to promote pressure ulcer healing. She has also been a pioneer in the reform of medical care in Japan. In addition, she has devoted herself to fostering the next generation of researchers, and as President of the Japan Academy of Nursing Science, the largest academic society in nursing science, she has been instrumental in establishing the overseas training system and the international research grant system.

For these achievements, she received the Fellow of the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), the highest honor in the world of nursing, in 2019. In 2020, she received the Healthy Society Award in the pioneer category.

She retired from The University of Tokyo on March 31, 2022, and assumed the position of President of Ishikawa Prefectural Nursing University in April 2022. She was also appointed Professor Emeritus of The University of Tokyo on June 21, 2022.
